Patio & Pool Lighting in Spring, TX
Comfortable light for patios, kitchens, pergolas, pools and fire features, so your outdoor rooms stay open after dark.
For much of the year in Southeast Texas, the best time to be outside is after the sun goes down. Patios, outdoor kitchens, pergolas and pools are where many families spend their evenings, yet they are often lit by a single bright fixture by the back door. Spring Landscape Lighting designs patio lighting in Spring, TX that makes these outdoor rooms comfortable: enough light to cook, move and see faces, without glare, without bugs swarming a bare bulb, and without turning the backyard into a stage.
What's included
- Task lighting for grills, outdoor kitchens, bars and serving counters.
- Ambient light for seating and dining areas, under covered patios, pergolas and cabanas.
- Step, deck and hardscape lighting at level changes, pool coping transitions and seat walls.
- Landscape lighting around the pool: trees, planting beds, water features and the view from the house.
- Accent lighting for fire pits, fireplaces, outdoor TVs and other features, plus zoning and dimming so each area can be set independently.
Underwater pool lights are usually part of the pool equipment and handled by your pool builder or electrician. We design the landscape and hardscape lighting around them so the two systems look like one plan.
Fixtures and techniques
Hardscape lights
Low-profile LED fixtures tucked under seat-wall caps, counter edges and step treads. The light source stays hidden and the surface glows.
Downlights
Small fixtures in pergola beams, patio ceilings and trees that light the table and floor rather than people's eyes.
Accent uplights
Light on the trees and plantings around the space so the edges of the yard do not feel like a black wall.
Dimmable zones
Separate control for the kitchen, dining and pool areas so you can go from cleanup brightness to a quiet evening level.
Outdoor living lighting relies on low, layered output. Hardscape fixtures typically draw 2 to 5 watts each. Kitchen task lights may need more, and we place them so the cook is not standing in their own shadow. Color temperature stays warm, usually 2700K, because skin tones, food and wood finishes look better in warm light and it feels more relaxed. Our warm white vs. cool white guide explains why.
Designing for Spring, TX backyards
Heat, humidity and insects
Summer evenings here are warm and humid, and bright, exposed light sources attract insects. Lower-output, shielded fixtures and warm color temperatures tend to draw fewer bugs to the seating area than a single bright floodlight. We also keep fixtures away from spots where they would heat up surfaces people touch.
Pools, water and chemicals
Fixtures near a pool face splash-out, chlorine or salt, and constant moisture. We specify corrosion-resistant fixtures, keep wire connections out of splash zones, and follow the clearance rules that apply to electrical equipment near pools. The low-voltage transformer is mounted at a safe distance with a proper GFCI-protected supply.
Covered patios and pergolas
Many Spring homes have covered patios with fans and a single ceiling fixture. Adding small downlights in beams or using wall-mounted fixtures gives a more even, flattering light. Wiring routes are planned around the structure so they are hidden, not stapled along beams.
Views from inside
Large back windows turn into mirrors at night when the yard is dark. Even modest lighting on trees and beds beyond the patio lets you see out, and makes the yard feel like part of the house.
Common mistakes we avoid
- One bright floodlight. It lights the patio and blinds everyone sitting on it. Layered low light is more comfortable and more useful.
- Visible light sources at eye level. Seated eye level is lower than standing, so fixtures that seem fine from the door can glare at guests. We check from the chairs.
- Lighting the pool area but nothing beyond. Without light on the surrounding landscape, the yard ends abruptly in darkness.
- Glare across the water. Light reflected off the pool surface can shine directly back at the house. Aiming and fixture position matter.
- No separate control. If the patio lights are on the same circuit as everything else, they are either always on or always off. Zones solve this.
An outdoor room should feel lit like a room, not like a parking lot.
Connecting the backyard to the rest of the design
Patio and pool spaces rarely stand alone. Mature trees around the yard often deserve tree and garden lighting, side paths need pathway lighting to connect front to back, and smart lighting controls let you set scenes for entertaining and quiet nights from your phone. If you are curious what an outdoor living system costs to operate, the energy cost calculator will give you a quick estimate, and our article on how much electricity landscape lighting uses walks through the math. Spring Landscape Lighting will also review your backyard at night so the plan reflects how you really use it.
Frequently asked questions
Can you install lighting near my pool?
Yes. Low-voltage landscape and hardscape lighting is commonly installed around pools, using corrosion-resistant fixtures and following the clearance requirements for electrical equipment near water. Underwater pool lights are usually handled by the pool contractor, and we coordinate the design with them.
What is the best lighting for an outdoor kitchen?
A combination of focused task light on the grill and counters, placed so the cook does not cast a shadow over the work, plus softer ambient light nearby. Warm white around 2700K keeps food and people looking natural.
Will patio lighting attract bugs?
All light attracts some insects, but bright, exposed and cooler-colored sources tend to draw more. Shielded, lower-output fixtures with warm color temperatures generally help reduce the problem around seating areas.
Can I dim my patio lights?
Many modern low-voltage systems can be dimmed by zone, either at the transformer, with compatible dimmable fixtures, or through an app-based controller. We plan for dimming during design if you want it.
Can lights be added to an existing pergola or covered patio?
Usually. Small downlights can often be mounted on beams or rafters with wiring concealed along the structure. We look at the construction first to find the cleanest routing.
