Halogen to LED Savings Calculator
Compare an existing halogen system with an LED retrofit: energy, cost and lamp replacements per year.
Your current system
Assumes 365 nights a year and an average 3,000-hour halogen lamp life. Labor, transformer changes and fixture replacement are not included.
Where LED savings come from
An LED upgrade saves money two ways: it draws a fraction of the power, and it largely ends the cycle of replacing burned-out halogen lamps.
Energy
A 4–5 W LED can replace a 20 W halogen lamp, cutting that fixture's energy use by roughly 75–80%.
Lamp replacements
Halogen lamps often last a few thousand hours, so a system running every night may need lamps replaced every year or so.
Transformer load
Lower wattage means the same transformer can power far more fixtures, making future additions easier.
Retrofit lamps or new fixtures?
Swapping halogen bulbs for LED retrofit lamps is the lowest-cost route, but it only makes sense if the fixtures, sockets and wiring are in good condition. Corroded sockets, cracked lenses and brittle wire are common in older systems around Spring, and they will keep causing failures no matter what lamp is inside. In those cases, integrated LED fixtures and a quick redesign often deliver a better result.

Frequently asked questions
How much can I save switching landscape lighting to LED?
Energy use for each converted fixture typically drops by 70 to 80 percent. Add avoided halogen lamp replacements and the yearly savings for a mid-size system can be significant; enter your own numbers above.
Can I just put LED bulbs in my old fixtures?
Often yes, if the fixtures and wiring are sound and the transformer is compatible. Corroded or damaged fixtures are usually better replaced.
Will LED look different from halogen?
It can. Choose a warm color temperature, usually 2700K, and a similar beam angle so the converted system keeps its warm, natural look.
